April 27, 2011

I can honestly say that this was the scariest day of my entire life. Nothing else compares and I hope nothing else ever scares me this much.

We were prepared for bad weather. but did not realize just how bad it would be. I was busy working away and listening to the weather for my parents in North Alabama. They had lost power and I was fearful of bad weather sneaking up on them. As our sirens went off, I went ahead and put our pillows/blankets in the hallway. Our hallway is open to the living room and blocked off by a baby gate. I put Huddy and the boys (Boyd & Blue) behind the gate as Spencer and I continued to watch the weather coverage. I joined them and grabbed Huddy's small crib mattress, just in case.

As we watched the tornado roll in on CBS 42 coverage, I began to panic. I panic in small thunderstorms, so Spencer was trying to keep me calm and assuring me it was not near our home. As he looked closer at the live video, he realized it was really close to our neighborhood and then we heard it. He rushed under the mattress with us and we all clung to each other as the wind got stronger. I do not know how to explain what we felt and what we saw. It was unreal and nothing like I have ever seen. We could see large trees flying past our front window, next our grill went by and then the house began to shake. As I prayed a fearful prayer, Spencer held us all tight. What seemed like forever, was only a matter of seconds and when it was over, the smell of tree filled our home.

As we emerged from our hallway, we first saw that my office was full of leaves, twigs, and water. Then Spencer glanced out the front door and took off. A house across the street was under a massive tree. The next several minutes were a blur to talking to neighbors we have never met and coming together to make sure everyone on our street was safe, luckily we were. We had no clue just how bad it was, until others from streets over streamed into our area and then moved on to help others.

The rest of the night was sickening. The night air was filled with darkness and the glow of emergency lights. The sound of sirens echoed into the night and the following day as well. We were shocked to see the change of the landscape of a city we adore. I am not sure that the pictures that flood the internet and scroll across the tv do justice for what my eyes have seen. We were blessed to have only a small amount of damage and all of the lives of our little family spared. My heart breaks for all of those that have been affected in such a worse way and while I am ready to return to my home, my eyes fill with tears at the thought of what my city will look like when I return.

I am confident that not only my city, but all the areas of the South will come together and reach out to help one another. There are so many ways anyone, from anywhere can donate their resources in such small ways. I encourage anyone reading my story to find a way to help out those who really need you right now. I am not sure of all the resources, as this is my first day back with a computer, however I will provide the links that have been brought to my attention.

Eggo in the Oven

I love supporting other moms and their creative talents. Lately, I have found myself loving a few specific companies. Take a moment to check them out and the wonderful products they are offering. This post will be the beginning of series focusing on how you can support moms!

Eggo in the Oven

If you are in need of custom made baby clothes, you must check out Kim's work. I found her through my favorite non-profit, Wyatt's Warmth and the amazing tshirts she made (featuring my donated logo to Wyatt's Warmth). As I flipped through her posted pictures on facebook, I fell in love. Her work is classic, but modern. After seeing a baseball onesie she had custom made for a client, I knew I needed one for Huddy. I contacted her, sent over a jpg of my idea, and she quickly sent back her plan. I was super pleased with her ideas and placed my order. A couple of weeks later I received this adorable shirt in the mail.

I was incredibly pleased with her work. Her stitching is very clean and the overall quality is wonderful! Her pricing is also very affordable and remember everything is custom, so just like my company The Individuality, your choices matter! Huddy will be sporting this while hunting Easter eggs with his baseball basket!

A New Hobby

I am an avid collector of hobbies. It is actually an addiction and I can't stop. I recently became part of a wonderful group of crafting ladies online and it has been quite the inspiration. The beautiful items they create keep me in awe every single day. If I could choose any craft to just pick up and add into my life, it would be sewing, without a doubt. My Granny taught me at a very early age and I love it. However, I do not own a sewing machine and for now it is just not at the top of the budget.

So this left me researching other avenues to send my creativity into. I wanted something very hands on and not at all digital. I spend all day working on the computer (trust me I love it) but I want something to get me away for at least a few minutes a day. I have tossed around the possibility of exploring knitting or crocheting but always felt quite overwhelmed. After a trip to Hobby Lobby with my mom a few days ago, I decided on crocheting.

This little kit will be my guide, as well as many, many online tutorials. Yes, I know I wanted to get away from the computer, but it is nice to actually watch someone do this very tedious little craft.

I am currently just playing around with the stitches and teaching my hands how to hold the hook and yarn. I think it will take a bit of time before I am able to complete anything that I am truly happy with or that is worth showing off. But for now, it is something to occupy my time and allow me to express my creativity in a different way.

This is what I have so far. I honestly don't know what it is or what it will be, but I can already see improvement from my first row to the last.

On the Sunnyside

I woke up super early this morning and was at the computer by 5am. I must admit I have been really bitter the past few days. I don't accept change well and I often struggle to move past what is comfortable.

I ALWAYS have music on, it is actually an obsession. I can't work without music. This song came across my slacker play list and might be the exact words I needed to hear in my life right now. This is a very old song and has been recorded by many wonderful artists over the years, but I will include the Brad Paisley version as it is the version I heard this morning.

Keep On The Sunny Side of Life

There's a dark and a troubled side of life
There's a bright and a sunny side, too
Tho' we meet with the darkness and strife
The sunny side we also may view

Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side,
Keep on the sunny side of life
It will help us every day, it will brighten all the way
If we'll keep on the sunny side of life

Tho' the storm in its fury broke today,
Crushing hopes that we cherished so dear;
Storm and cloud will in time pass away
The sun again will shine bright and clear.

Let us greet with a song of hope each day
Tho' the moments be cloudy or fair
Let us trust in our Saviour alway
Who keepeth everyone in His care.

I must also include one more version that I just came across because it reminds me of listening to music with my Granny. I can remember from a very early age seeing my Granny covered in flour from making biscuits with her radio turned way up.

Sunnyside Baptist Church

I recently had the opportunity to develop a new logo for a self proclaimed,"God-Exalting, Christ-Centered, Spirit-Driven Old Country Church". It has been a joy to watch the endeavors of this church as my cousin Mat is the pastor. I was thrilled when he contacted me and even more excited as we began to discuss the beautiful results of great typography. He requested something timeless, classic, & tasteful. This allowed me to work on something a bit outside of the norm and to explore a variety of serif fonts.

I am quite happy with the outcome and love the simplicity of this logo. I also love the particular font we used for the word Sunnyside. It has a bit of casualness about it that for me evokes the ministry this church portrays to an outside.

Enjoy! Also check out the wonderful things my cousin is doing over at Sunnyside Baptist Church.

Per Se Photography

I couldn't have been happier with the winner of my giveaway, although I would have been more than happy to work on ALL of the entries.

I knew I would fall in love with this one from my very first visit to her website. The following is an excerpt from the beginning of the logo design process.

"I love that natural beauty that you seem to capture with your lens. Unfortunately, in the age of digital technology, the true art of photography seems to be dwindling away. However, when I find a photographer with a portfolio such as yours, I am filled with happiness."

We went through a few ideas before finally deciding that a simple font based logo would represent her work perfectly. Please enjoy the final logo and check out her photography at: http://www.persephotography.com/.

I am so bummed that my copy of Southern Living was lost in the mail this month, but the website is just as much fun!

Check our these Easter Table Decorations for ideas on how you can spruce up your dining room. A lot of these items look fairly easy to create without very much work.
